Out of 49 teams from various universities nationwide, the Mapúa Gaming Society (MGS) Ares clinched the third spot in the AcadArena ACES: Campus Open for Call of Duty Mobile (CODM) tournament alongside the Malayan Cuties from Malayan Colleges Laguna. The win came following a close game against  Xavier University - Ateneo de Cagayan’s Xceed Crusaders with a final score of 1-2 in favor of the Ares, last October 30, 2021.

MGS Ares players Eldrick John Aguado, Russel Agnes, Karl Philippe Descalzo, Dhanielle Joshua Sy, and Joseph Bryan Salazar alongside team substitute John Patrick Marcelino won in-game currency worth 1,000 CODM points and a cash prize of PHP 500.00.

Ares Team Captain Aguado shared that when they were preparing for the competition, the team worked together to actively participate in simulated games, where they joined online practice matches against other teams. He added that they were driven by their passion for the game and their aim to bring glory to the University.

Although they faced difficulties due to their conflicting schedules, Aguado noted that the team eventually found a way to overcome them. “Since Mapúans are well-known for managing our time very well, I think that helped us prepare [for the tournament] while doing well in our academics,” he remarked.

This is the second time the team joined the competition after their first run in the AcadArena ACES in 2020. Although they were eliminated early on during their first try, the esports team rose and bounced back with stronger play and better strategy.

As esports continues to rise, Aguado encouraged the Mapúan community to continue developing their skills in their chosen passion, “If you are passionate about something, just keep practicing and don’t lose hope. Even the great ones lose sometimes.”  he shared.

The MGS Ares also competed in the quarterfinals of AcadArena’s ACES: Campus Open for Call of Duty Mobile National Campus Alliance playoffs last December 4. Moving forward, the team hopes to join other CODM tournaments that will allow them to participate effectively as a team.
