In a virtual launch ceremony through Zoom on November 25 last year, Huawei Technologies Philippines Inc. unveiled its scholarship agreement with Mapúa University (MU).
Mapúans taking up BS Computer Engineering (BSCpE), BS Computer Science (BSCS), BS Electronics and Communication Engineering (BSECE), and BS Information Technology (BSIT) are the beneficiaries of the scholarship grant.
“[Huawei] knows that education is a key component in bridging this digital divide,” shared Huawei HR Director Jade Cao. She further noted that extending assistance to deserving students is a hopeful move towards helping the country “build its local talent ecosystem and contribute to the continued growth of the Philippine economy.”
Meanwhile, MU President and CEO Dr. Reynaldo B. Vea expressed nothing but gratitude for the scholarship offer for Mapúans. “I would like to thank Huawei for the generous offer of scholarship for Mapúa students, especially at this time when most people may be suffering some hardships because of the current situation.” He then added that scholarships are crucial in the continuity of learning of students.
Also in attendance were Admissions and Scholarships Dean Dr. Dionisia Lanuza, School of Information Technology Dean Engr. Ariel Kelly Balan, and School of Electrical, Electronics, and Computer Engineering Dean Engr. Alejandro Ballado.
Lastly, the University received five stars for social responsibility, employability, and facilities.
Investments in the local community and charity work composed social responsibility, while the assessment for employability came from employer feedback, graduate employment rates, and career services support. As for the facilities, QS looked at student accommodation for sports, health support, library expenditure, student organizations, and other available facilities.

To qualify, the student must be at 3rd-5th year standing at the time of application with a 2.0 or better GWA. They must also have no failing grade to avail of the scholarship, which will cover the full tuition free until graduation – as long as eligibility is maintained.
Four slots were opened for grabs this quarter – one each for BSCpE, BSCS, BSECE, and BSIT – with the application period having lapsed last December 4. “[Huawei is] on their 2nd phase of their recruitment of scholars,” the Center for Scholarships and Financial Assistance (CSFA) revealed in an email interview.“They have already interviewed all the shortlisted applicants and on their final stage of making the decision.”
As of January 4, CSFA shared that Huawei has not yet informed them if the application period will be conducted yearly or after the first batch of scholars have graduated.
